@mckaylamaroney Me and Miss Dougie
No. She hasn’t trained it and she said earlier this year that she wasn’t going to for the Olympics. What’s more, she doesn’t remotely need it.
She HAS, however, said on more than one occasion that she wants to try it after the Olympics so she can have a vault named after her and she’s probably the only person in the world who can talk about a triple twisting yurchenko and not have me terrified for her health.
Because, unfortunately, she is NOT a good AA gymnast.
She’s pretty good on floor (though she has a troublesome third pass that everyone wishes her coaches would change) and did that event in team finals at Worlds last year, but her beam and bars are traditionally not good.
She did put up a pretty GREAT beam set at Olympic Trials, so she has potential there though low difficulty, but her bars score even lower than Aly’s, again mostly due to low difficulty because her basics and swing are actually much better than Aly’s, and, while we’re here, her swing is far better than Jordyn’s as well.
So, in the end, her huge vault scores put her in the mix, her floor can keep her there, but she almost always loses a TON on bars and beam.
veevavavoom replied to your post: RAWLES! gymnastics query, unless you already answered it! where do you think the judges deducted for mckayla maroney’s vault? also after seeing beth tweddle and he kexin’s bars routine, who do you think will get the bars title?
I saw! But I meant I’ve heard ~chatter that it should’ve been 16.5. Did you agree/disagree?
By the strictest interpretation of the rules, no.
In comparison to every other Amanar ever done in history, by a man or a woman, absolutely.
Absolutely.
I mean, in a sport like gymnastics you don’t like to say that anyone is guaranteed anything, but yeah no. She’s a lock.
She qualified in first place by over .8 with an Amanar that was mediocre to bad for her. People will likely attempt to throw some bigger vaults than they did in prelims, but no one has her combination of amazing form, incredible power, and ability to stick.
She stands up her vaults, she wins. And I have literally never seen her not stand up her vaults.

Gabby and Aly are in the All-Around Final tomorrow at 11:30AM EST, McKayla is in the Vault Final on the 5th at 9:50AM EST, Gabby is in the Uneven Bars Final on the 6th at 9:50AM EST, Gabby and Aly are in the Balance Beam Final on the 7th at 9:45AM EST, and Aly and Jordyn are in the Floor Exercise Final also on the 7th at 11:20AM EST.
Now when NBC will deign to show all of this tape-delayed and sensationalized in primetime, who the fuck knows.
Mckayla Maroney with a beautiful vault. She scored 16.233 highest of the night

Landing with feet apart is .1 and she generally has a brief .1 leg separation during her block. Whatever asshole gave her a 9.7 (her three counting scores would have been 9.8, 9.8, and 9.7) probably took .1 for shoulder angle on the horse or somesuch.
