Mem and I first decided to watch the pilot last year because I was surfing Wikipedia and discovered that they’d made Tygra Lion-O’s adopted brother and there was TENSION about the throne and their respective treatment, etc and we were like IS THIS JUST COLD A THOR AU WITH CAT PEOPLE?!!?!?

Beyond the superficial similarities, though, they’re quite different THOUGH NO LESS EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING FOR ME.

For one, Tygra actually KNOWS he was adopted. And he was initially raised as prince and heir because the king and queen thought they couldn’t have children, but then Lion-O was born (and the queen died in childbirth) and so AS TYGRA PUT IT that day he lost the two things he cherished most in the world: his mother and his kingdom. The latter being SLIGHTLY hilarious because he was all of like four, but at the same time if you were told from birth that you were the prince and it was your kingdom then LOL PSYCH OUR *REAL* SON IS GOING TO BE KING INSTEAD, even if you were only four that would probs fuck you up.

Tygra grows up making himself into this total paragon and excelling at all things kingly and regarding statesmanship and basically everything! And more important he’s better than Lion-O at everything because Lion-O is conflicted about being destined to be king — and is fucked up by the general attitude that Tygra would be a better king — and so he goofs off a lot and is kind of immature and doesn’t do what he’s supposed to.

The brothers are much more directly rival-y than Thor and Loki start out because Tygra is jealous of Lion-O not actually having to work to have everything just handed to him and Lion-O is jealous that Tygra is Mr. Perfect and perceives Tygra as deliberately trying to humiliate him/show him up. So they clash a lot and are super competitive with Tygra antagonizing Lion-O’s short temper (Tygra has this line in one episode to Lion-O where he straight up goes YOU’VE NEVER BEATEN ME AT ANYTHING IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE) and Lion-O basically being a smug little shit about how he’s king and has the sword and the gauntlet and the Destiny and Tygra doesn’t. 

So basically Lion-O’s position is that Tygra’s always questioning him and challenging him and proving himself superior all in an effort to undermine Lion-O. Whereas Tygra’s like your very existence undermines me and makes all of the effort I put into everything ultimately meaningless.

Thus, you have a situation where the clever adopted brother is actually appreciated for his talents and virtues, but it still doesn’t matter because the ~trueborn~ son is The Chosen One.

BUT LOL the show is not actually… good enough to do anything interesting really with the themes of privilege and everything at play there.

Though I will say it did a MUCH better job with the Tygra/Cheetara/Lion-O love triangle than I thought it would? Like I expected it to be SUPER GROSS, but it wasn’t! Basically, Tygra and Cheetara were in love since they were like 12 and, despite Tygra generally being a supremely confident person, she was his ONE BLIND SPOT because he never managed in the intervening ten years or so to figure out that she liked him back (LOOOOOL ALL THE FIC I WANT TO WRITE ABOUT THIS DESTROY ME NOW).

Meanwhile, Lion-O didn’t even know Cheetara and met her for the first time right before the action of the story starts. Then, she ends up traveling with the brothers and she’s very kind and supportive and encouraging of Lion-O and believes in his ability to rise to the occasion and be a good king and leader. Which, it should be noted, she is a cleric, basically a royal mage/spiritual guide, SO THIS IS HER JOB AND HER CALLING, but Lion-O is like aww yeah obviously ~I got this. So, Tygra is all tormented because after all this time of his ~being invisible~ to Cheetara, it seems like Cheetara will fall into Lion-O’s lap like everything else. Lion-O is a TOTAL DICK about it and explicitly makes Cheetara into another competition, BUT the show actually does a decent job presenting the fact that Tygra is disgusted by this! It’s not a competition to him! She’s not a prize to be won! She’s a person for whom he has strong feelings! And unfortunately for him because his life SUCKS, she’s (in his mind) already chosen Lion-O. Then, after this all comes to the fore in the plot, Cheetara is like UH NO… SINCE YOU ARE APPARENTLY VERY OBLIVIOUS I WILL MAKE THIS AS CLEAR AS I POSSIBLY CAN: TYGRA, I AM GOING TO BONE YOU. I AM GOING TO BONE YOU SO HARD. Then Lion-O is a pissy little jerk about it loooool.

SO UHHHH

IDK I feel like there IS someone back there having good ideas that are unfortunately mostly beyond the overall show’s ability to execute as well as they deserve??

Hahaha at least one person has reblogged to say that it’s obviously not because Gus is BLACK but blah blah other reasons that are CLEARLY mutually exclusive with the fact that he is black. Yes, person, thank you for explaining to me exactly how aversive racism works! If there could be any other reason in existence CLEARLY IT IS THAT AND ONLY THAT and the fact that this is a pattern throughout all of fandom regardless of the canon or dynamics therein with the only consistent factor being the non-whiteness of the person in question is meaningless and it all has absolutely, positively nothing to do with the underlying, ubiquitous, constantly reinforced, and rarely examined (on a micro level) kyriarchal structures of society.
