Look how your children grow up. Taught from their earliest infancy to curb their love natures — restrained at every turn! Your blasting lies would even blacken a child’s kiss. Little girls must not be tomboyish, must not go barefoot, must not climb trees, must not learn to swim, must not do anything they desire to do which Madame Grundy has decreed “improper.” Little boys are laughed at as effeminate, silly girl-boys if they want to make patchwork or play with a doll. Then when they grow up, “Oh! Men don’t care for home or children as women do!” Why should they, when the deliberate effort of your life has been to crush that nature out of them. “Women can’t rough it like men.” Train any animal, or any plant, as you train your girls, and it won’t be able to rough it either.

Voltairine de Cleyre (via petitefeministe)

The best part of this essay is when she advocates for children to be brought up with no gender-role stereotyping, and gets in some not-so-subtle digs at heterocentricism and heterosexism in the process.

Did I mention this was written over a hundred years ago? Because it totally was.

16 African countries now have more women MPs than UK

b-sama:

When people think of Africa, they don’t associate it with gender equality.

That was one of the key findings in recent ComRes polling of 2,000 UK adults for See Africa Differently: just 5% say that gender equality is something they’d associate with Africa.

Yet 16 African countries now have a higher proportion of women in Parliament than the UK. This is up from 12 since we last reported to you which African countries were doing better than us – a sign of the rapid progress being made on the continent (and partly perhaps – it has to be said – better counting all round, too!)

This compares to 18 European countries who have a higher proportion of women in Parliament than the UK.

Rwanda has the highest proportion of women in Parliament in the world and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was this month re-elected in Liberia – meaning that she stays firmly in the list of 20 women world leaders currently in power.

The last time the UK had a female Prime Minister was in 1990 – so long ago now, that The Iron Lady – starring Meryl Streep as Maggie Thatcher – is making it seem nostalgic.

Country % of women in Parliament

Rwanda 56%
Seychelles 45%
South Africa 45%
Mozambique 39%
Angola 39%
Tanzania 36%
Uganda 35%
Burundi 32%
Ethiopia 28%
South Sudan 27%
Sudan 25%
Namibia 24%
Lesotho 24%
Senegal 23%
Mauritania 22%
Eritrea 22%
UK 22%

The purpose of feminism isn’t to make a particular type of woman. The idea that there are inherently wrong and inherently right ‘types’ of women is what’s screwed feminism for so long – this belief that ‘we’ wouldn’t accept slaggy birds, dim birds, birds that bitch, birds that hire cleaners, birds that stay at home with their kids, birds that have pink Mini Metros with ‘Powered By Fairy Dust!’ bumper stickers, birds in burkas, or birds that like to pretend, in their heads, that they’re married to Zach Braff from Scrubs, and that you sometimes have sex in an ambulance while the rest of the cast watch and, latterly, clap. You know what? Feminism will have all of you.

Caitlin Moran, How To Be A Woman. (via valjeans)

I just want to keep reblogging this over and over and over and over and over for everyone who keeps moaning that women who have sex or children or drive tractors or eat “too many” crisps or slap people when they’re exasperated or don’t separate their wash or employ a cleaner or drink gin from the bottle or don’t ever go on a single date or like pink or don’t like pink or shave or don’t shave are failing feminism.

Because of course Nightwing deserves to be as empowered as Catwoman.
Jumping out of windows half naked with a kitten is clearly one of these things.

nice ways to ask about someones gender

megamindsexual:

- which gender do you identify as?
- what are your preferred pronouns?

dont ask someone if theyre trans its really not nice especially if you phrase it like “were you born male/female”

surprisingly not everyone wants to tell you about what genetalia they had when their mom pooped them out and its not actually your right to know

GSM stands for Gender and Sexuality Minority. It’s an alternative name for LGBTQIA+ community.

iamwhoiamandidontgiveadamn

I LOVE THIS. LGBTQIA+ leaves groups out and makes some groups seem more valid than others. :)

(via handingoutstars)

Certainly a nice way of condensing the letter list too. More inclusive, more practical, and potentially excellent.

I bought two coloring books

offyougoapparently:

One is pink and one is blue.

The pink one has pictures of: fairytale scenes, ballerinas, a bride and groom, many animals (mostly farm animals, pets, birds, and sea creatures), sea scenes, flowers, shoes, jewelry, sweets, presents, and hearts.

The blue one has pictures of: emergency vehicles, dinosaurs, trains, construction vehicles, pirate stuff, knight stuff, sports, wild animals (only - none that are tamed), yet more vehicles, planes, space, reptiles, insects, and a shark.

There are only two subjects that the pink and blue coloring books share: 1. Penguins, and 2. Elephants.

So there you have it. Penguins are gender neutral. And vehicles are really, really, really important to male gendering, I guess.
