Q:Do you think the writers of Elementary wrote Irene as Moriarty the whole time, and to explicitly examine and subvert the women in the refrigerator trope, or was she fridged and then the writers (who purposefully gave themselves wiggle room) saw how people reacted and switched it up? Like Elementary seemed to get more and more aware of what their fandom wanted with things like representation, more Bell, more Alfredo, more Clyde, etc. re-watching the show makes rewatchin the fridging more bearable
I find the idea that they didn’t plan it the whole time utterly mystifying tbh. The entire narrative of the season is clearly structured around it.
I mean, I was never upset over Irene being “fridged” because I never believed for a second that she was dead. I didn’t think that she was HERSELF Moriarty because I thought that would be too awesome for network television, but everything about her supposed death screamed “not actually dead” in addition to the fact that you don’t just kill off one of your most iconic characters sight unseen.
Not to mention that I think this grants a little bit too much credit to fandom and its preferences. I mean, shockingly, sometimes there are professional writers and showrunners out there who care about representation and are actually pretty good at their jobs?
Q:Is there anywhere to read your "A Compass Wouldn't Help at All" commentary? And do you have plans to write more in that fandom? Because you write Spock and Uhura and SpockandUhura so wonderfully! Speaking of wonderful writing I hope Winter's Heart is still on the table! Have a fabulous weekend!
You can read my A Compass Wouldn’t Help at All commentary here!
I make no promises about future Trek fic I may or may not write, but if all else fails, I still have like 40,000 words of Trek fic from after the STXI that I never got around to posting that I might poke at if I get in the mood.
Winter’s Heart IS the table.
Q:How do you feel about Deadpool and other Marvel favorites? I realize i haven't heard you on the comic front in a while.
How I feel about Deadpool is: who cares?
I don’t know who else counts as Marvel favorites, but I probably don’t care about them either if Deadpool is the standard.
Q:rawles!!!! ELEMENTARY!!!! what did we do to deserve such a precious perfection-filled show?
I have no idea. AND I WISH I DID SO THAT WE COULD REPLICATE IT FOREVERMORE.
Q:wait--how do you think fandom will react to irene/moriarty?
Tumblr loves hyperfeminine morally ambiguous white women in a way that often involves ignoring or excusing the genuinely horrible things they do by pretending that their gilded weaponized lipgloss or wtfever means that them victimizing others — often even other marginalized persons — is somehow empowering. Tumblr will also often flock to this very specific style of hyperfeminine morally ambiguous white woman whilst ignoring female characters who don’t appeal to those same tropes and even holding those other characters as weak or unworthy or boring or unfeminist for not being the exact same way.
I find it tedious and offensive because it’s an extremely myopic way of dealing with female characters, it’s needlessly prescriptive about what makes a “good” female character, and it often gives rise to total intersectionality fail such as people deciding that Elementary is only worth watching for the discerning feminist/person invested in ladies now that it has a hyperfeminine morally ambiguous white woman when Joan Fucking Watson was there the entire time.
Q:can i not like kristen and we still be friends?
WHAT DOES THE TAG SAY, ANON?
Q:2 arranged marriage fics exist that I know of, both are WIP and so far so good. The first is "The Descent" by wideeyed/openmouthedwideeyed. She's only posted thus far on the jaimebrienne[.]org forum (which is member locked but membership is open) but she also posts on ao3 so hopefully she will post it there as well. She's also the author of the West Eros High au which made me cry yesterday. The other is "Inside Out" by goldenslumber on ao3. I want at least 87 more because really favorite trope.
;_____;
u r so good to me
Q:out of curiosity, is a Jaime/Brienne Pride and Prejudice AU a thing that would appeal to you, because from what I've seen I feel like they have a pretty good arrogant jerk/not taking any of your bs mister dynamic going on. Also Jaime would be the absolute worst at love confessions.
Friend, I never met a Pride and Prejudice AU I didn’t like.
HAH that’s a lie, there are a ton that I hate inaccurately put in the P&P section of AO3 instead of their actual fandom’s sections, BUT I WOULD BE SO INTO A JAIME/BRIENNE P&P AU.
Really any Jaime/Brienne Regency AU would do me fine.
Q:please don't keep tagging your answered asks as 'jaime x brienne', it clogs up the tag
I tag answered asks with ‘jaime x brienne’ when there’s something in them that I want the tag to see. I fail to see how the things I tag are clogging the tag more than people’s numerous one sentence posts about how they ship it (which btw I have no problem with). Or maybe you’re just confusing the fact that I answered three questions during a lull where there was nothing else in the tag with me clogging the tag with my apparently not topical links to Jaime/Brienne recs, Jaime/Brienne AU fic idea, and discussion of Jaime’s importance to Brienne’s arc and how fandom engages with that.
In conclusion, get off my back, I tag what I want.
Q:I'm pretty sure Jaime wants to make out with Brienne a whole fucking lot
He wants to make out with her so hard.
Not really relatedly, I’m so glad there are so many high school/college AUs in Jaime/Brienne fandom. Good job, everyone.
Though @diva-viva just made me want an arranged marriage AU like BURNING.
Q:despite adoring the jaime/brienne dynamic I don't really ship them (or maybe I do...or I don't? it's 85%? my head is confused) but my weird opener aside, I find the jaime/brienne shippers some of the sweetest and just all around loveliest people in this mess of a fandom and I love reading your posts about the ship. if there's ever a shipwar, call me because i'm totally on your side! (ps. do you have a fic rec for a multi ch fic for them? maybe modern au?)
If there’s ever a shipwar I plan to be far far faaaar from it, friend.
At any rate, my pinboard has all my recs.
Q:You know I do want to rant about something Brienne of Tarth! I HATE with a passion when people say "BRIENNE SHOULD NOT BE DEFINED BY HER RELATIONSHIP W JAIME BECAUSE XYZ REASON". And i mean people as in people who don't ship B/J and obv don't care about Brienne as a character. She is obv much more than Jaime but dude her relationship (non romantic or not) is VERY important to character development esp how she views knighthood (her dream!!) and honor.
lol
That’s fandom’s favorite generic complaint whenever people are shipping a female character in a ship that they don’t like.
Also, yeah, Brienne’s most significant relationship in the books is easily with Jaime. Acknowledging that and using that to explore her character is not reductive.
Q:re: brienne/you, where would you go for your first date? what kind of modern clothes do you think she would wear? if you had to cook a meal for the both of you, what would you make? what would be "your song"?
i actually feel like brienne and i wouldn’t be compatible and plus i have a girlf but every time i read a modern au and brienne isn’t wearing tailored men’s suits i get sad
because
nnnnng
Q:haha, thank you for putting up with this discussion for so long! it was really interesting and made me think a lot more about the quality of GRRM's writing, so I appreciate your willingness to put up with it! :D
lol it’s cool
SOMETIMES I JUST WONDER HOW I GET INTO THESE THINGS
Q:The best reason I've got (still a shaky post hoc rationalization, though) for the incest taboo in Westeros is the importance of marriages to boost your house's status. If you're in a noble house and you have children, you want them to be bargaining chips for alliances with other houses, and you can't do that as easily if you have to keep prying your children off of each other. Incest taboo doesn't apply to the Targaryens in that case because they're already the most powerful house.
sure why not
