Oh, my gosh! Have I really not talked about this series in a year? Apparently so! The Spiritwalker series is a trilogy of books by Kate Elliott, the first two of which have come out, Cold Magic in 2010 and Cold Fire this past September. It takes place in a fantasy alternate history in which a number of very different things have happened:

  • A very, very long ice age has gripped the Earth for a very, very long time. This has impacted not just the terrain and popular fashion, but the spread of empires and the development of various technologies!
  • Magic exists! Also strange creatures, demons, zombies, etc. In the Americas, intelligent hyper-evolved dinosaurs (troodons, called trolls) live north of the indigenous human population, which long ago migrated to and has remained in the south, where it’s at least marginally warmer.
  • A “ghoul plague” was accidentally unleashed in west Africa, which drove the associated empires and peoples north; they have long since absorbed the Roman empire and colonized Europe! The culture explored in Cold Magic is a fusion of Celtic, West African, and Roman culture.
  • Most of the main characters are explicitly multiracial and people of color, including Cat (and I think the choice of cover model for the series a bit exasperating for all the reasons you might expect) and her cousin Bee. Andevai, the love interest/fake-out antagonist, is explicitly very dark-skinned! 

It’s also very, very well-written and very meaty, too. The paperback’s over 500 pages, and that’s without the thick margins and large, wide-spaced font lots of YA novels use to pad the page count. It’s just a really long book! And I found it very engrossing and very engaging, and I am SO SO SO EXCITED TO READ THE SEQUEL OMG. *__________*

Michael Vartan joins Zoe Saldana in 'Colombiana'

Michael Vartan will star opposite Zoe Saldana in “Colombiana,” an action movie produced and co-written by Luc Besson that is being directed by “Transporter 3” helmer Olivier Megaton.

The film centers on a woman (Saldana) who as a child witnessed her parents’ murder in Bogota. She grows up to become a hitwoman by day but in her personal time engages in vigilante murders to lead her to her ultimate target: the mobster responsible for her parents’ deaths.

Vartan will play Saldana’s boyfriend, an artist with no idea what she does for a living who is her only link to normalcy.

Besson wrote the script with Robert Mark Kamen; the pair previously teamed to pen “Taken,” “The Transporter” and “The Fifth Element.”

Besson is producing with Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and Ariel Zeitoun.

Production will begin in late summer in Chicago, New Orleans and Mexico City. The action thriller is set to be released Sept. 2, 2011.
